Advanced Driving Schools

Advanced driving schools are important partners in making roads and highways safer by developing drivers that are trained to drive with care and control.

Advanced driving is actually a term that dates back to the 1950s. It was first adopted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, an organization founded to encourage British motorists to improve their driving skills and demonstrate them in a new advanced driving test.

The IAM based its concept of advanced driving on the method and style that British police drivers use. Outlined in a book Roadcraft, the driving method employs a system of car control which is applied, with an element of flexibility at times, to all driving situations.

Over the years, the understanding of advanced driving has evolved in response to the changes in automobile technologies as well as road rules. In 2000 the Driving Standards Agency of Great Britain agreed (with IAM, Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and DAM) the following definition of advanced driving:

"Advanced driving is the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to make reasonable progress unobtrusively, with skill and responsibility. The skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all round observation, anticipation and planning. This must be co-ordinated with good handling skills. The vehicle should always be at the right place on the road at the right time, travelling at the right speed with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely in the distance that can be seen to be clear."

Simply put, advanced driving is really just about good driving. It is about being methodical in making sure that you drive safely and deal correctly with various forms of road hazards.

The benefits of attending advanced driving shools are countless. Not only to do you achieve improved safety for you and your family, you also save on gas and cause less pollution. Why? Advanced drivers are presumed to drive more smoothly and produce less stress on their cars. You also get to enjoy driving more and feel more confident in meeting demanding situations on the road.

Topics normally covered in a course on advanced driving include defensive driving techniques, speed awareness, car control and skid avoidance, hazard perception, positioning and cornering, motorway driving, and overtaking.
