Aside from the more popular Texas defensive driving courses, there are many other similar courses offered in the state. Note that there are more than 40 licensed course providers and there are more than 100 driving schools in Texas. Hence, it is not surprising to find variations of defensive driving courses. Some courses are referred as ticket dismissal courses, traffic safety, or seat belt specialized courses.
No matter how they are called, what is more important is that the courses and the course providers are approved by and have received licenses from the Texas Education Agency. The TEA is the best place to check in locating a driving school to attend and find out about all active driving safety classrooms and video distribution locations. They also have information on courses that are approved to be taught online.
The proliferation of defensive driving schools and courses in Texas is probably an offshoot of the state’s record as having one of the highest highway accidents in America. In 1997, for example, Texas registered more than 3500 deaths on Texas highways, the second-highest traffic fatality toll in the US at that time.
Factors that were identified to contributing to Texas’ traffic problems include speeding, a lack of driving experience, failure to use seat belts or infant car seats, and inattentive driving, such as when drivers use cellular phones. However, driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs (DWI/DUI) is the leading cause of Texas' sorry record.
I t is a good thing that driving schools have stepped up to the challenge by providing venues for Texas drivers to become more safety-aware. The TEA-approved driving safety courses are listed here. In some cases, the courses are referred to as "Driving Safety" and in some instance as "Specialized Driving Safety". All driving safety courses run for a total of six hours.
In Texas, however, there is no state-approved course on aggressive driving or advanced driving safety or defensive driving courses. Instead, all driving safety courses discuss aggressive driving as one of the topics. There are some courses that have been approved to be also taught in Spanish.
Other related defensive driving courses in Texas include the AARP’s AARP's 8-hour "Driver Safety Course", AAA's "Driver Improvement Class", American Safety Council's "Online Traffic School", and National Safety Council's "Online" course, "Coaching the Mature Driver" course or "Professional Truck Driver".
The above courses, however, are not accredited for use for ticket dismissal in Texas.
