Learning Safer and Smarter Driving with a Defensive Driving Course
Written by Jerry Malcolm
Few of us suddenly come to a realization of, "Hey I am not a safe and smart driver". But we all have had a time when we thought that about the people we drive with on the road. Learning safer and smarter driving with a defensive driving course is as much learning how to deal with others who are driving badly as it is improving your own driving techniques so you drive in a way that keeps you out of accidents at all times. Even if you are an excellent driver, we all could use to improve in this important skill. If you have been in a wreck or gotten a ticket, that is often a wake up call that despite your confidence, your ability to operate a vehicle could use some work. So if you find that you should take a defensive driving course because it will help get a ticket dismissed or get your insurance rates down, see it as a chance to start over learning how to drive well so that you don't get into those traffic problems that result in a damaged car and a ticket to pay. It is no secret that the amount of congestion in traffic and the number of accidents happening out there seems to be getting worse. While we cannot always avoid the kind of traffic emergency that can result in an accident, there is a lot we can do to avoid the accident itself. Part of that is both knowing and understanding the good of the rules and laws that govern how to drive in this country. Playing by the rules can virtually eliminate the chance that you will ever get a ticket again. When you add in that the simple act of driving within the traffic laws can not only get a ticket dismissed but it can keep you from getting a ticket again, that makes learning safer and smarter driving with a defensive driving course a very smart strategy. Most of us don’t think of taking a class in driving after we get our license. But the courts who hand out fines for traffic tickets are very aware that they can help drivers become safer and smarter with a defensive driving course. That is why they give the incentive that you can often get a ticket dismissed or get points taken off of your driving record by simply completing an approved defensive driving program. The courts and the legal authorities who are out to reduce traffic violations know well that if you are trained in defensive driving techniques, you probably will not be back to pay another ticket or have to deal with a devastating auto accident. Sometimes people complain when they know they must take a defensive driving course that, "I already know how to drive." But just knowing how to start a car and navigate it down the road does not automatically make you a safer and smarter driver. The curriculum of a defensive driving course will go far beyond just the basics of how to operate a motor vehicle and the basics of dealing with traffic. Defensive driving is a skill that involves anticipating problems and then having a plan to stay out of problems long before they become an emergency situation. A defensive driving course gives you a huge amount of control over the many random variables that could come up as you drive that could become a problem for you while driving. Using defensive driving strategies, you will be able to spot a bad driver, an upcoming road hazard or a traffic accident about to happen. While you may not be able to stop bad things from happening to people, in the majority of cases, you will be able to avoid being the person that the bad thing happens to and in doing so, you drive home safely leaving others who don’t know defensive driving methods to deal with the traffic tickets and accidents. It is not difficult to find a good defensive driving school. And since most states now permit drivers to take a defensive driving class online and still get all of the short-term benefits from completing that class, there is really no excuse for not getting educated and staying educated about how to become a safer and smarter driver through a defensive driving course.
